Knysna Sport Academy

playing for the sake of the game

Knysna Sport Academy runs a very successful cycling program headed up by coach Paulus Sigonyela, with over 100 young cyclists.

Children from the townships surrounding Knysna are encouraged to join our program free of charge. They simply register with the Academy, and their parents sign an indemnity form. All sessions for development cyclists are also free of charge. The young cyclists are split into specific groups to make the sessions as effective as possible.

The Academy has 70 bicycles which were all donated. As far as possible, these bikes are maintained and serviced by the Academy. Spares are ordered from a local bike repair shop, Bike Centre, which also does any maintenance and services on the bikes that cannot be done by the Academy. On average, 90% of our bikes are running at any given time.

The Academy cyclists participate in a number of cycling events annually. Participants are selected according to their age, ability, merit and any other qualifying criteria prescribed by the event:

  • Mini Attekwas
  • Knysna Bull (Knysna)
  • Kingfisher MTB
  • Madibaz XCO Series (4 legs)
  • Spur Schools MTB League Series (4 legs)
  • Knysna Rotary Cycle Tour
  • Spur Kids Race Oyster Festival
  • Karoo to Coast
  • Tour de Plett
  • 7 Passes MTB Race
Four of our cyclists received Eden colours in 2019.
